First PreSeason game surpasses expectations

After a week of cancelled sessions due to extreme heat, the Bedians squad—made up of both regulars and trialists—finally returned to the pitch. Spirits were high, but so were expectations. Flixton, likely facing similar challenges, looked sharp from the outset, dominating possession and putting Bedians under pressure. The opening exchanges belonged to Flixton, but the Bedians dug deep, making three substitutions around the half-hour mark. Their resilience paid off and the teams went into halftime locked at 0-0.

The second half saw four more changes for Bedians, who emerged with renewed energy. Yet it was Flixton who struck first, finding the net in the 57th minute. Bedians, however, refused to back down. The equaliser came in thrilling fashion: Michael Olayinka delivered a pinpoint 50-yard pass that split the Flixton defence. Ethan Cassidy, making his debut at just 19, raced onto the ball, feinted a shot, left his marker on the ground, and slotted a clever finish at the near post.

Flixton weren’t finished. In the 82nd minute, Ghalib unleashed a thunderbolt from a tight angle, his shot crashing in off the crossbar to restore Flixton’s lead. But Bedians had grown in belief. As the match entered stoppage time, 18-year-old 'veteran' Liam Wood surged down the left, drawing a foul in the box. John Grant stepped up and calmly dispatched the penalty, sealing a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Overall, a good performance, given that Flixton had 5 of the first-team squad turning out for Flixton Reserves; however, we have a lot of hard work to do in integrating all the new players and increasing fitness levels during the holiday season.
